What should you expect at the first appointment?
At your initial appointment, your Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (OMP) will ask about your current lifestyle and medical history. Disclosing symptoms and history is very important as it will allow for appropriate treatment for you and your body. The initial assessment the Osteopath may assess the area of concern along with other areas that may in fact be the cause of the problem. For example, if there is pain and discomfort in your lower limb (i.e sciatic pain), the hip joint and lower back will also be assessed because of the origin and pathway of the nerve.
What does an osteopathic treatment consist of?
Osteopathic Manual Therapy is gentle and safe. It is widely recognized as one of the safest, noninvasive, and drug-free therapies for treating the neuromuscular system. Depending on your ability and the objective of treatment at that time, you may be put in different positions (on your back, sides, stomach, or seated).
Please note that while immediate relief and improvement of mobility are common after treatment, there is potential for adverse effects. This may present as mild soreness or aching discomfort 24-48 hours following treatment, much like if you went too hard during a gym workout.
Is Osteopathy covered by insurance?
Most extended health benefits cover Osteopathic care, but MSP does not. Please check with your provider, as all plans are different.
